Applied Statistics

Another interesting report was written by Patricia Whitridge, on behalf of the Statistical Education Committee, regarding the SSC involvement in the Canada-Wide Science Fair and announcing this year’s winner of the SSC award at that event. Nancy Reid presents a report on the recipients of the Society’s awards this year and announces some new awards that the Society will be instituting in 2008 as well as the re-organization of the Awards Committee required to deal with these extra awards. Consultant’s Forum editor Janet McDougall selected a very interesting article by Eric Woodsworth on his career in wildlife biometrics at Environment Canada for this issue. As always in the July issue we include a pictorial account of our recent very successful annual meetings in St. John’s, NL. Thanks to Peter Macdonald and Chris Hammond for the wonderful pictures. The issue is rounded out with a look at what is new with NPCDS and what we can expect in the next issue of CJS.

SSC Awards at the 2007 Canada-Wide Science Fair

The Statistical Society of Canada sponsored one cash award for projects at the Canada-Wide Science Fair, held this year in Truro, NS. The SSC award is for outstanding projects in statistical theory, or projects that use sound study design, data analysis and data presentation.
The students decided if they wished to be considered for the SSC cash awards. The prize money this year was provided by the SSC itself. The judges reviewed all of the nominated projects and selected the prize winner based on their project displays and their answers to questions raised by the judges in personal interviews.
Malcolm Stagg of Calgary, Alberta was awarded the prize of $1,000 in the Senior Category for his project “Distributed Robotics: An Intelligent System”. His project proposed a system of neural-based distributed robotics for improved performance and environmental interacinteraction. Malcolm used an adaptive communication algorithm to share information and present feedback between robots. Such robotics have possible application in minefield clearing, exploration and mapping, and military surveillance.
The 2008 Canada-Wide Science fair will be held in May 2008 in Ottawa, ON. Volunteers to help judge for the SSC Award are most welcome.
For 2007, the Youth Science Foundation, who organizes the Canada-Wide Science Fair each year, changed the structure for prizes being awarded by various sponsors. They were strongly encouraging sponsors to offer awards in any one specific scientific domain. This poses obvious problems for the SSC, since statistics can be part of a project in any scientific domain. Eventually, they were persuaded to allow sponsors to offer prizes across domains and they are committed to continuing this in the future. The Statistical Education of the SSC feels strongly that supporting the Canada-Wide Science Fair is an important initiative, since it helps promote statistics to students and maintains the visibility of the SSC in the field. During discussions around the Science Fair, there were many suggestions made concerning supporting local science or data fairs, in addition to the national one. The SSC Board of Directors has agreed and will try to put aside money to support both the national and some smaller local fairs in 2008. So, if you are aware of a local fair taking place in your community where you think the SSC could sponsor a small award for students making good use of statistics, please let us know!

Young Scientists of the Future
Carly Proudfoot, Fern Leavens
Student Science Fair Speakers
East Kootenay
We are the youth of today and the leaders of tomorrow.
Science will be the key to our minds and paths to greatness.
Good evening and welcome to the 2007 “BC Innovation
Science Awards”. My name is Carly Proudfoot and this is my
science fair partner, Fern Leavens. For the past three years,
Fern and I have competed at the Canada Wide Science Fair.
We are thankful to have been given this opportunity to speak
tonight on behalf of the 70 other talented BC participants, as
well as any other student who has ever used science as an
exploration tool.
Since 1962, YSF Canada has been making project-based
science accessible to young Canadians with an interest in
science. Fired by the tireless energy of over 8000 volunteers
including scientists, educators and parents, a network
of over 100 local organizations from British Columbia to
Nunavut to Newfoundland and Labrador encourages the
scientific efforts of over half a million young Canadians.
A science fair project is the ultimate answer to the oftenasked
student question: “Why do I need to learn this stuff
anyway?” It integrates, into one functional activity, virtually
all of the skills and arts that are usually taught separately
in most schools. When brought to completion, the project
is an amalgamation of reading, writing, spelling, grammar,
math, statistics, ethics, logic, critical thinking, computer
science, graphic arts, scientific methodology, self-learning
of one or more technical or specialty fields, and if the project
qualifies for formal competition, public speaking and defense
in front of expert judges. It is perhaps the only educational
activity that allows students to teach themselves, to take
from the established information what they need to discover
something exciting and new, and to identify and choose
tools that they need to conduct and conclude their project.
From our own experience, when a student completes a
science fair project, year after year, through junior and
senior high school, the science fair process yields mature,
self confident, skilled, and competitive young leaders who
have career goals and the preparation, discipline, and drive
to attain them.
Our science fair projects have allowed us to put into practice
some of the knowledge we have studied in school towards
subjects that have a personal interest to us. We both
have learned so much throughout the past three years of
countless hours of research and diligent experimentation.
Our communication skills and confidence in presenting
ideas to a variety of people have been dramatically improved
due to our participation in science fairs. It is our hope that
if we qualify again for 2008 Canada-Wide Science Fair that
we might be able to attain one of the many thousands of
dollars worth of scholarships or bursaries that are awarded
to the winning participants. Next year we will both be going
on to further our studies at university and the skills we
have developed through science fair will hopefully carry us
through our continuing education.
Science fair isn’t always hard work and perseverance. It also
has a very fun and sociable side. The travel opportunities
are amazing. Last year we visited Nova Scotia and the year
before Quebec, and before that we came here to Vancouver
and experienced campus life at UBC. Each year the CWSF
committee works hard to ensure the participants are entertained
with several action packed days as well as evening
functions. Meeting students from across Canada and around
the world has opened the doors to many new friendships.
It’s great to be able to share your project ideas with other
young people who have a common interest in science.
Science fairs have given us the opportunity to not only meet
great friends but also open the door to future connections,
summer jobs or even a career. This program has taught us
how to effectively network and communicate with amazingly
successfully people such as the many individuals in this
room. Many of these doors we just spoke about could
possibly even be opened tonight. Coming to this event is not
only about eating incredible gourmet food, or staying in the
beautiful Fairmont Hotel but for all science fair students
meeting here with you this evening, it is a privilege and we
are honored to be among your presence. So Carly and I
encourage you, the students, to speak with these successful
people sitting at your table and tell them about your project,
ask questions, exchange business cards, talk about the
future, and how you believe that you can make a difference.
We would now like to take this moment to acknowledge our
school and our community. It is the combined effort of great
teachers, parents and community support that come together
to enable us as students to share our ideas and make future
goals seem attainable. By encouraging leadership and public
involvement, Science Fairs help young people like us to
develop the attitudes and abilities needed to become leaders
in the knowledge-based economy. Most importantly, we the
youth of today and the leaders of tomorrow are learning that
our ideas and efforts do matter, especially to the future of
generations today and those to come.

Lethbridge, AB student eco-leader wins
Toyota Earth Day Scholarship national award
- Canada’s top environmental scholarship
(TORONTO, June 2, 2009) – Adil Adatia, the
winner of, the 2009 Toyota Earth Day
Scholarship national award, was presented
with the award today at a ceremony in
Toronto, ON. Earth Day Canada President Jed
Goldberg and Toyota Canada Inc. President
Yoichi Tomihara recognized Adil Adatia’s
outstanding achievements in environmental
community service, academics and
extracurricular participation. To date,
$500,000 has been awarded to 100
exceptional young Canadians through the
Toyota Earth Day Scholarship Program.
“Adil is a perfect example of a student who aspires to better their environment and make
lasting impacts in their community,” said Jed Goldberg, President of Earth Day Canada. “He
has truly stepped forward as an environmental leader and is most deserving of this honour.”
Adil, from Lethbridge, AB, was selected from a dedicated group of 15 students, all regional
scholarship recipients who were chosen from a pool of hundreds of applicants across Canada.
Adil’s commitment to environmental action is inspiring. At just 17 years old, he is already
highly involved in scientific research and discovery and is the Youth Coordinator of the
Southern Alberta Community for Environmental Education, and the Founder of his school’s
Environmental Club.
Adil has conducted original research in bio-pesticides where he demonstrated how fungi
could be used as an environmentally-friendly alternative to chemical pesticides in the control
of grasshopper populations that attack crops in Alberta. His project won accolades at the
2007 Canada-Wide Science Fair, winning both the silver medal for biotechnology and
pharmaceutical sciences and the Agriculture and Agri-Food Award. He is also an Executive
Member of the Student Mentorship Association Regarding Technology and Science
(SMARTS).
At his high school, Adil spearheaded the creation of a drought-tolerant garden on unused
school grounds to address issues of water shortages and endangered species in southern
Alberta. The garden will also have a registered Monarch Butterfly Waystation with public
information sessions to follow on how to develop drought-tolerant landscaping throughout
the community.
“How Canada’s youth engage with the world now says a lot about how they’ll shape the
world tomorrow,” said Yoichi Tomihara, President of Toyota Canada Inc. “That’s why we’re so
pleased to honour Adil with the national award, for demonstrating such exemplary academic
and environmental excellence. I’m confident this passionate student leader will help show all
Canadians how they can live Earth Day, Every Day.”
In addition to the $5,000 award he received as a regional scholarship finalist, Adil was
presented with a Panasonic notebook computer.
The Toyota Earth Day Scholarship Program was established to reward and encourage
environmental commitment among students. Fifteen entrance scholarships are awarded each
year to graduating high school students entering their first year of post-secondary education.
Recognizing that environmental leaders will come from a broad range of academic
backgrounds, winners are selected regardless of their intended program of study. For more

Cassandra Fong, a Grade 11 student at Britannia high school, was chosen to represent British
Columbia at the Canada Wide Science Fair in Nova Scotiathis year - the first time for
any Britannia student. Cassandra won a GOLD medal for her project at the Regional science
fair in Vancouverand received a $2,000 entrance scholarship to UBC.
In November 2006, the UBC Let’s Talk Science Partnership Program began a mentorship
program whereby graduate students were paired with undergraduate students and together
they mentored two teams of Grade 8 and 9 students from an inner city high school in
Vancouver. The undergraduate students participated in the program as a part of a second year
biology course through community service learning.
In its first year, the program was introduced at Britannia Secondary to help the students
prepare for their school’s upcoming science fair in February 2007.
In preparation for the fair, 18 graduate students and 14 undergraduate students mentored a
total of 58 Grade 8 and 9 students. These students met with their mentors before Christmas
and several times in the New Year to design, conduct and analyze their projects.
“I am thrilled with the success of this program” says Erika Eliason, UBC Let’s Talk Science
Partnership Program coordinator. “I’ve judged a lot of science fairs over the years and I began
to notice a pretty obvious trend. Students from affluent neighborhoods or whose parents may
be a professor at UBC consistently develop outstanding science fair projects. In contrast,
students from poorer neighborhoods who may not have the same access to different resources
tend to have much simpler projects using very basic materials. I wanted to set up a program
where these students could be better supported as they develop their science fair projects and
have the same access as other students around Vancouver.”
At the Regional Science Fair on April 5th, Britannia celebrated its BEST year ever! A total of
eight teams (two from each of Grade 8, 9, 10 and 11) qualified for the Regional competition.
Britannia received three medals, one scholarship and a cash prize.
Cassandra Fong received a GOLD medal for her work with a new type of lie detector entitled
"Liar Liar your stomach's on fire". She also received an entrance scholarship to UBC and will be
representing BC at the Canada Wide Science Fair in Nova Scotia.
Nerissa Abbott in Grade 8 received a SILVER medal for her work "Exposing dinoflagellates to
varied pH levels" and Cleve Kim and Ivan Kwan in Grade 9 won BRONZE for creating their own
wind tunnel. Their project was titled "How's the Air in there?"
Finally, Marie Cheung received a cash prize for her work "Catalysis, the decomposition of
hydrogen peroxide."
All of the students from Britannia Secondary schooldeserve to be congratulated for their
impressive effort. The UBC LTS-PP thanks the Faculty of Science and Zoology, Botany,
Computer Science, Chemistry, and Physics and Astronomy departments at UBC for their help
in funding the 2006/07 mentorship program.
