Today was "adventure day" and it certainly was that.  We boarded our coach shortly before 8:30am after collecting

our boxed lunch and having our annual Team Ontario picture taken.   Our first stop was the Alberta Birds of Prey Centre which is Canada's largest rescue sanctuary for birds of prey.  We were introduced to several species of owls and hawks including the endangered burrowing owl.  Highlights were having the chance to rub noses with a red eagle and seeing a young bald eagle fly between perches.  Theresa and Aaron did their own mini rescue by freeing a duck that was trapped under the wire surrounding its cage.  Trying to put it back in the cage was another story.

A two hour drive through the foothills of southern Alberta took us to the spectacular Waterton Lakes National Park which is a UNESCO Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve.  A mini "Banff in the prairies" summed it up.  The group spent the most part of the two hours skipping stones in the lake and all agreed that the mountains surrounding the lake was the most picturesque view on the trip so far.  We wandered up to a large waterfall that was nestled in the rocks just on the edge of town.  The rumour of a great ice cream shop enticed us back into the small town of Waterton and we all enjoyed some cool treats.  It was difficult to leave such a peaceful spot but the intrigue of Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, another UNESCO World Heritage Site got us back on the bus.

On our 1.5 hour trip there we passed hundreds of wind turbines located in the vast fields.  We arrived at a huge cliff, known as Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump and were shown a movie and given a great tour by native guides who explained the importance in history of how and why annually the buffalo were run off the cliff.

We returned for a late dinner.  Again our soccer players went off for a fourth night of soccer competition with Aysar's team beating Govind's team once again.  Aaron, Brandan, Theresa, Scott and Jane headed out for an evening walk that somehow ended up at Dairy Queen.  It was a great day and it is really good to see how well our team Quinte gets along.  The conversations during the day are unpredictable but always include some reference to science eventually.  After such an intense judging day yesterday, this was the perfect way to spend a day together.

It was the most important judging day at the fair today and Team Quinte was up early and looking very confident going into the disciplinary judging round this morning.  All the team members felt they had done their best and that all their judges, who they each talked to for 20 minutes, were fair and some even friendly.  We met for lunch, a time to debrief and gear up for the afternoon's session.

Everyone met their special awards judges for a shorter time in the afternoon for only 10 minutes each and again all went smoothly.  Aaron, Theresa and Brandan have their projects all together in a row which makes chatting very easy.  Govind and Aysar are on opposite ends of the fair and so have met many new participants over these past three days.
After 8 hours of judging today the team was ready for some relaxation this evening.  Again Govind and Aysar were bending it like Beckham on the soccer field. (Check the video on the QRSTF youtube Channel)  Brandan, Aaron and Theresa opted for the movie night complete with popcorn and pop.  Their movie choice of Les Miserables was a solemn choice but did not in any way reflect their experience of today.
If anything there was a good omen today; Scott and I won the bridge building competition over all the other delegates...perhaps
some foreshadowing for what is to come for team Quinte at the awards ceremony.
We are all fine-tuning our mountain goat skills as we have to climb up and down a long, steep hill between the judging hall and our cafeteria and residence many times a day.   As well, wind gusts of over 50 km/h are not uncommon and make hairstyles rather interesting.  All in all, a great day and we are looking forward to being together as a team for our tour of southern Alberta tomorrow.

You can watch the Award’s Ceremony on Thursday. It is being streamed this year…. http://youthscience.ca/cwsf-2013-live-stream (please share this with  others please) Please go to cwsf.youthscience and look at the schedule for the correct time.

Another spectacular warm sunny morning in Lethbridge greeted us.  We met for our breakfast at 7:30am

with Calvin Cycles being drawn on paper plates and  Dr. Who dominating our breakfast conversation.  It was off to another morning of public viewing (schools)
for our finalists and meetings for the delegates.
We met for lunch and then headed off to our Discovery Day sessions held at Lethbridge University.  The favourites for Aaron, Brandan and Govind  were trying to crack the codes at the Logic and Puzzles session, Aysar was impressed with his session on performative science and Theresa enjoyed seeing

the human brain in a jar at the Behavioural Neuroscience lab.  Some of us braved the high winds by eating our dinner outside while the die-hard Leafs fans took their meals and crowded around Scott's live feed for the game.  Aysar and Govind ran off their meal by joining a group of delegates from all over the country in a pick up soccer game,  Aaron chilled, while Brandan and Theresa played cards and combat frisbee (better to ask them what this involved).
Theresa made some great trades with the Aussies today as well.
We met later in the evening to go over some last minute details and each of their presentations in preparation for the formal judging day tomorrow.  They are all confident about what they have to say and Scott and I are extremely proud of what they have accomplished so far.  It was a very low key evening, and just as well.  They were in their rooms by 9:30pm and can look forward to a good day tomorrow.
The quote of the day has to be from Theresa after hearing Aaron explaining his animated version of the Calvin Cycle to Brandan, " I think rocket science must be easier than that.  It reminds me of why I don't like plants!"

It was built as part of a major diversion of the Crowsnest Pass route between Lethbridge and Fort Macleod. The river crossing was previously over a wooden trestle measuring 894 m (2,933 ft) long and 20 m (66 ft) high; an impressive structure in its own right.
Length: 1,623.86 m (5,327.625 ft)
Height: 95.7 m (314.0 ft) above river bed
Materials: 12,400 tons of steel
Deck spans and lengths:
44 plate girder spans each of 20.4 m (66.93 ft)
22 plate girder spans each of 30.15 m (98.92 ft)
one riveted lattice-truss of 32.6 m (106.96 ft)
Rigid braced steel towers: total of 33

Team Quinte
Up and ready for another busy day. We Judging workshops, orientation sessions and the grand opening and banquet today. There is not a lot of down time today. Of course, making sure they know their project.
Time to get up and get moving.
Our team was up and raring to go for breakfast at 7:30am this morning.  We enjoyed a walk in the coulee ( a large valley, with glacial impressions)  behind the residence following breakfast and realized as we huffed and puffed, "what goes down, must come up".  The white-tailed deer are very tame and we were able to get quite close to them and snap a few pictures.  We also caught pictures of the magpies that are numerous on campus.

We participated in a Judging 101 session before lunch which really just emphasized what we already knew about what to expect on Tuesday's judging day.  The one thing that was discussed by the team was how they only have 20 minutes with a judge to sell their projects.  The judges will have checked out the projects on Monday evening and so will be familiar with each project before they talk to each finalist.  Our team seems very confident about what they are going to say, especially our veterans Govind and Theresa.  With a balmy temperature of 26 degrees we enjoyed lunch outside overlooking the valley.
A iron buffalo

on the peak of one of the neighbouring hills caught Aaron, Brandan and Theresa's attention, they couldn't resist and climbed to the top for another photo opportunity.

Off to the Exhibition Hall for a public viewing in the afternoon.  This was a chance for everyone to iron out the wrinkles in their talk and meet some of the other delegates.  Again, everyone on Team Quinte was relaxed and positive about the presentations they had.  Aysar and Govind had their picture beside the medals in the Exhibition Hall with hopes to be wearing them in a few days!
We then hopped on a bus for a short bus ride to the ENMAX Centre where we enjoyed our opening ceremonies.  There was lots of entertainment, including
a band, stilt-walkers, hoop dancers and a chemistry show with lots of explosions.  A lucky participant's name (out of the 480 candidates) was drawn to win a XBox Kinect and the winner was.....our own Aaron Morrison.
The only thing to match this great win was the Leafs win tonight.  Aysar and Govind had the game live streamed at the table and there was a cheer in the room when they won.  Go Leafs Go!  Switching sports, the evening ended back on campus with a soccer game with Team Quinte (minus Aaron and Brandan who were intent on playing with their new prize) and several other groups joining in.  Overall, a great day.  Scott and I have decided that keeping the group together is often  like "herding cats". Then off to bed for all of them since tomorrow is a very long day.
