The 54th Annual Quinte Regional Science and Technology Fair was held at Loyalist College in Belleville, Saturday, April 6th, 2013 from 9:00 to 5:00 p.m. About 135 colourful, well researched projects from all over Hastings and Prince Edward Counties and from grades 4 to 12 were on display. About 180 students took part. During the fair, students competed for honours and awards in many categories as they made presentations to the judges.
Over 110 judges worked very hard during the day to both evaluate and encourage the students. As part of the judging process every student received a written list of comments on how they might improve their future projects.
Besides the judges, there were many people operating behind the scenes, all on a volunteer basis, to help the fair run smoothly. Our Patron and Major Sponsors provided funds to help send our five qualifiers to the Canada Wide Science Fair (http://cwsf.youthscience.ca), while our remaining Sponsors supplied prizes in the forms of cash, trophies and this year an operating telescope. This fair is truly a community effort. Representing The QRSTF this year at the Canada Wide Fair to be held in Lethbridge, Alberta in May are, Teresa Decola from Bayside Secondary School, Govind Pasharodi from Moira Secondary School, Aaron Morrison from Albert College, Brandan Ranjith from Albert College and Aysar Younes from Albert College. They will be accompanied by delegates/chaperones Scott Berry, and Jane Moodey.
However, the central and most endearing part of this event is the enthusiasm of the students. As soon as you ask them about their projects, it is like turning on a tap as all kinds of information comes forth. 30 of our great communicators won special prizes in a draw during the Awards Ceremony.
On the following pages, are listed the first place winners in each group of five to seven projects and the Specialty Award Winners including the Canada Wide Science Fair Awards. There is a new award this year. (The Purdue Pharmaceuticals Medical Award)
Pat Findlay, Chief Judge of the Quinte Regional Science and Technology Fair said, ‘‘Probably the most enjoyable part of this for me, and the reason that I keep coming back year after year, is to see the fascinating work performed by these young scientists and inventors. And, let’s make no mistakes about it, for the vast majority their work is every bit as rigorous as that of professionals in the field; it is only the scope and topic that is different. They won’t have the background yet, but they have the mindset, and with that, the background and skills will come. Case in point --- where I work, there are engineering and computer science grads working today who are prior QRSTF competitors. Now THAT is amazing!’’

Throughout the morning, students were interviewed extensively during the first round of judging. First, Second, Third and Honourable Mentions, were awarded to each group of five to eight projects. A second round of judging was used to determine the best in each grade, specialty awards and the Canada Wide Science Fair awards.
This year the participants got to view the many programs Loyalist has to offer and tour many of the facilities.

The Canada Wide Science Fair Awards are of note because they include an all expenses paid trip to Alberta
in Lethbridge for 7 days (May), a value of approximately $1700. This year it is held at the University of Lethbridge
At the Canada Wide Science Fair they compete for almost one million dollars in awards. They will be given tours, workshops and demonstrates on science.
It is the 52nd Canada Wide Science Fair and it will be held in Lethbridge Alberta in May http://cwsf.youthscience.ca
The
Canada-Wide Science Fair
(CWSF) is the premier event of
the YSC National Science Fair Program and
is jointly presented
by
YSC, the national governing
body for science fairs, and a local Host
Committee comprised of professors, research
scientists, members of the business community, science educators,
and graduate students.
Each year, some
450 top young scientists in grades 7-12 are chosen from
approximately 25,000 competitors
at over one hundred regional
science and technology fairs across
the country.
These elite participants
compete in nine divisions
and three age categories
for medals and other prizes worth almost
one million dollars. Judges
include top scientists and
industry experts.
Youth
Science Canada
(YSC) is
the country's oldest
and largest non- profit,
charitable organization supporting the development of young scientists through project-based
and
experiential
science programs
delivered by over 100 affiliated regional organizations
in every province and territory.
How is the Fair run? The
CWSF week includes project setup,
judging, scientific and cultural
activities, social events,
banquets, and tours, including
visits to local museums, university and
industry research
labs, and wildlife conservation
areas. The week
culminates in a spectacular awards ceremony.
